Round 8 Results & Ted Fidock Trophy
Friday night and Saturday was a very big weekend for Brighton Rugby Club, as we welcomed our sponsors to the club, and competed with Woodville for the Ted Fidock trophy for the first time! The club welcomed Sarah Andrews MP (State Member for Gibson), Brett Smith (RUSA Board Chairperson), Amanda Wilson (City of Holdfast Bay Mayor) and Paul Smith (Woodville President).
The new trophy is awarded to the club winning the most games for the round, from Under 12s up to Premier grade. Brighton Under 16s started proceedings on Friday night under lights, and unfortunately lost to Woodville 5 – 30. Next up was our Under 18 team, who reversed this result in fine style, beating Woodville 38 – 24. The Ted Fidock trophy was evenly poised at one game apiece heading into Saturday.
Saturday was another glorious sunny day, and we were entertained by some fantastic rugby from the younger grades. In particular the Under 8 game was a feast of tries by both teams! The Under 10s then had a good win, bringing us to the next match-up for the trophy.
Brighton Under 12s won yet again, and gave themselves some space on the ladder, as well as moving Brighton ahead for the Ted Fidock trophy! It was then the turn of the Under 14s, who celebrated a big win, and will play next week for second place on the U14 ladder!
Next up on Saturday were the Brighton/Barossa women. The team started the game very well, and with moments to go in the first half, were trailing only 0 – 14. Unfortunately a try in the last seconds of the first half interrupted the team’s flow, and another score after the break left too big a gap to recover from. Woodville were now only trailing 2-3 for the trophy!
Fortunately for Brighton’s supporters it was now the turn of the Reserve grade, and they did not disappoint the home crowd, winning in fine style against an brave but undermanned Woodville side to remain undefeated for the season.
In the Third grade games, Brighton Gold played North Torrens, and had a big win to solidify second on the ladder. At Tregenza, the Brighton Black team toiled hard while short several players to eventually lose 40 – 62, picking up a bonus point in the process.
Before the final game we welcomed John Fidock to say a few words about Ted and the new trophy, and then instead of a brief silence for Ted, everyone joined in some noise for Ted, applauding his time as both a Woodville and Brighton legend.
This left only the Premier grade to finish the day… and Woodville made it clear from the first whistle that they would not make it easy for Brighton! Going ahead within minutes of the kick-off, Woodville were ahead for most of the first half. During the second half, Brighton felt they had taken control, only to have Woodville push hard again. Brighton eventually won 34 – 24, but Woodville made sure it was a tough win. Brett Smith announced Brighton as the inaugural winner of the Ted Fidock trophy, and Jacob France was the winner of the first Ted Fidock medal for best player in Premier grade, awarded by John Fidock.
A great day of rugby was enjoyed by all, and Brighton thanks everyone who came down and helped us celebrate!
Sponsors day!
The club was pleased to welcome many of our valued sponsors to the club on Saturday. The sponsors enjoyed the rugby while having a taste of the food and drink available at the club, and the committee was able to show the club’s appreciation for their ongoing valued support.
Brighton Rugby Club once again thanks our Major Senior Sponsor Beyond Bank Australia, our Major Junior Sponsor Holdfast Transport Crane Trucks, and all of our other club sponsors…
Syntax Specialist Electrical, Allan Real Estate, Creative Concrete, SA Storage Solutions, Gallagher Security, F45 Brighton, RJE Global, and BLK MRKT Coffee.
Vale Bobby Millar
Brighton Rugby Club is sad to advise of the recent passing of
Robert John (Bobby) MILLAR
Bobby Millar was a place kicker extraordinaire and winner of the Brighton Club Trophy for the most goals in the season several years in a row.
Introduced to rugby at Sacred Heart College, Bobby was involved with Brighton Rugby Club for about fifty years, playing over 300 games and winning a very high percentage of those! Bobby was a member of the 1968 side that broke through for the club’s first ever A Grade premiership.
In addition to his success on the field for his club, Bobby was selected in twelve South Australian state teams, and also coached at senior level, winning several Third Grade premierships. Later in his career Bobby was involved in a wide range of administrative positions at Brighton. As a registered electrician Bobby was often on hand to repair electrical problems in the Clubrooms at no cost, followed by enjoying a well-earned beer on completion of each job!
Thank you Bobby for your time as a valued member of Brighton Rugby Club.
The family will advise of details of funeral arrangements in the coming days.
Code of Conduct
The club encourages any player, spectator or other supporter to report any issues you may encounter out at rugby.
The Rugby Australia Code of Conduct provides a set of standards for everyone involved in Rugby to ensure it is played in a safe, fair and inclusive environment. It also outlines the procedures for reporting, complaint handling and investigations of alleged breaches.
Brighton Rugby Club and all of our members and supporters have a duty to protect those involved in the game, and it is important to report someone who has acted against one or more of Rugby Australia’s policies, so appropriate action can be taken if necessary.
Please approach your coach or manager, one of our Committee members, or our Member Protection Officer Catherine Costello if you need to discuss anything that concerns you.
Volunteers needed Ground Marshalls,
Canteen & Bar
The club needs volunteers to help with jobs on match days, especially home games.
In particular we need volunteers to act as Bar and canteen staff, and Ground Marshalls. One of these is required at every game, juniors and seniors. The coaches and managers are not able to fill this role as well, and are also busy organising their teams.
If you are able to assist the club by acting as a Ground Marshall, volunteering your time in the canteen or bar, or by helping with any other of many jobs on match days, please see your team’s manager or speak to one of the club committee at training during the week.
Please note that all teams will be rostered to help in the canteen for a Saturday Home game during the season. When your team is rostered, please make yourself available for a short shift in the canteen.
