ROUND 7 Results vs Burnside
Round 7 involved another trip to Woodville, but this time take on Burnside, in their home away from home for this week! Tough games were on the cards for all sides, and the Premier Grade in particular hoped to make a statement against the reigning premiers.
This week the first side in action was the Brighton Under 16s, who played the combined Barossa/Elizabeth team on Friday night at Brighton. Unfortunately the opposition had to forfeit, handing Brighton an automatic 28-0 win, but the two sides then lined up for an entertaining game, with lots of tries scored by the home team!
Out at Woodville on Saturday morning, the Get into Rugby and Under 8 squads played early, and then made room for two Under 10 games. Next up was the Brighton Under 12s. Brighton got off to a fast start, scoring early, but then gave up several tries. However 3 tries in 10 minutes got Brighton back in the game, until a final try by Burnside at the end sealed it, Burnside winning 38-28. Over at Waite Oval the Brighton/Uni team had their hands full with Port Adelaide, losing 5-57.
The Brighton Under 14s had a tough task against the undefeated Burnside, and did not get off to the start they were hoping for. After regathering at half time, Brighton came out and played much better, opening the scoring, and scoring the last two tries of the game to eventually lose 20-40.
Third Grade Black had a bye, and the Brighton Women had to forfeit their game, so it was left to the three senior men’s teams to finish the day on a winning note.
Brighton Thirds Gold were top, but facing the only team to beat them during 2025. Brighton started very confidently, scoring with their first possession of the game, and then again within the first ten minutes. Burnside came back near half time, only for Brighton to immediately hit back again. Burnside cut the lead yet again with another quick try after half time, but a penalty then a final try ensured a 27-12 win for Brighton.
In the Reserve grade, Burnside scored first, but Brighton hit back with two tries before half time, and never lost their lead after that. Burnside came back with a try after half time, but two tries and a penalty in less than ten minutes made sure of the victory for Brighton, winning 27-17 despite one more score at the end by Burnside.
Brighton Premier grade were keen to show that they deserved to be sitting top of the ladder with a huge game against the 2025 premiers. The game did not start the way Brighton hoped, with a very early injury and then a try by Burnside. It took Brighton nearly 40 minutes to finally hit back, scoring a try to go to the break leading 7-5.
Brighton then scored again after 2 minutes, and after another 30 minutes of tough rugby Brighton moved out to a good lead with two tries in 5 minutes. Burnside were suddenly staring at a big defeat, and made a huge effort to get back in the last few minutes. Despite scoring twice, Burnside could not overcome the deficit, and Brighton finished winners by 24-17.
