ROUND 5 RESULTS
vs Port Adelaide
Round five involved a potentially tricky away game at Port Adelaide, with some real winter weather for the first time this season!
First up just after 9am were the Get into Rugby and Under 8 teams. As usual Brighton had excellent numbers, and all of the players enjoyed their games in some of the better conditions for the whole day!
The Under 10s played next, and enjoyed the field to themselves this week. The squad has great numbers this season, but would prefer to be playing full 15-a-side games to give all players as much game time as possible.
Brighton Under 12s had a tough assignment against Port Adelaide, but came out of the gate hard with a dominant first half! Despite Port coming back Brighton held on for a 14-12 win, and kept themselves in touch with the top four! At Woodville, the other Brighton U12 team played very well to record their first by 42-22, giving the Brighton Under 12s a clean sweep for Round 5!
Brighton Under 14s did not quite dominate Port Adelaide as some spectators expected, but ended up comfortable winners by a score of 48-24. Brighton are firmly in the top four on the ladder, and have a couple of huge games coming up, including playing an undefeated Burnside in round seven.
Down the road at Woodville, the Brighton Under 16s played Woodville for the second time this season. After a loss in round one, Brighton played a great game. Only a decision not to award a try at the very end stopped Brighton from recording a thrilling win, eventually losing 29-33.
The senior games started with one that the crowd always looks forward to… Third grade Gold vs Black! The opening Battle of Brighton for 2026 started out well for the Blacks, scoring the first try. Gold hit back with two of their own, but Black ended the first half with another try to trail only 12-14 at the break. A quick try after halftime saw Black leading 17-14, and getting excited about a potential win, until Gold scored again under the posts to lead 21-17. Gold then scored again inside five minutes, and led 28-17 with more than 20 minutes to play. Brighton Black came roaring back immediately and scored again within another five minutes, and were back within a try at 22-28.
Both sides fought hard for the rest of the game, but neither could score again, and the game finished 28-22 for Brighton Gold, leaving the sides first and third on the Third grade ladder.
Brighton Reserve grade carried straight on where they left off last week. As the rain set in, Brighton dominated much of the game, scoring 4 tries in the first 20 minutes to set up a dominant win by a score of 50-14. Brighton next take on Southern Suburbs to confirm second spot on the ladder.
The last game of the day in very gloomy conditions was Brighton Premier grade. Port Adelaide had won 2 of their last 3 games, and may have felt they could push for an upset.
The first half was much closer than expected, with Brighton scoring twice but Port striking back and holding out for the rest of the first half. The conditions in the second half started to improve, and Brighton scored again after only 5 minutes. However it took nearly another 30 minutes for Brighton to get their fourth try and pick up a bonus point, and a final try near the end had Brighton win by 33-7.
In the end, all of the Brighton teams at the Port got through the cold, rainy conditions and picked up wins, and Brighton Under 16s and Third grade Black were within one try of winning as well.
