FINALS RESULTS
Week One
Brighton had a very big first weekend of finals football, with six of our teams involved, including five of those sides with the chance to go direct to a Grand Final!
Both days of semi-finals were hosted at Onkaparinga, and on Saturday Brighton had the Under 12s, Third Grade and Reserve Grade all trying to advance direct to the final.
The day started with the Under 12s and Third Grade playing at 10am. Unfortunately the Under 12s had the tough assignment of playing top side Onkaparinga. Despite Brighton’s huge efforts to get themselves in to the semi-final, this week was a bridge too far, and the U12 season finished one week short. Congratulations to the Under 12 squad and coaching team for an amazing season. After looking out of the running early on, the squad swept all before them, including beating the top two sides away. Well done team!
Meanwhile the Brighton Third grade had a tough task as they played Burnside for a Grand Final berth. Brighton had not won against Burnside this season, so had to play their absolute best. This they did, going out to a commanding lead by the end of the first half, and barley allowing Burnside to touch the ball. The second half started well, but then Brighton allowed two quick tries and led by only four points. However the team settled down again, and went on to score again and round out a good win by
26-14, putting the Third Grade into their sixth successive Grand Final!
Everyone had the chance to catch their breath before the Reserve Grade played in the afternoon. Brighton Reserves had also finished top and were playing Old Collegians for the right to go straight into the Grand Final. Brighton were not able to dominate the game, but were never out of it and led at certain points in the game. Despite being outscored five tries to three, Brighton were kept in the game until the very end by some great goal-kicking, and finally lost by only two points. Brighton have the chance to play again next week and are still confident of making the grand final again.
Sunday had two big games in the junior grades, and then a blockbuster clash in the Premier Grade, with all three teams taking on Onkaparinga at their home ground.
Brighton Under 14s were first to play, and set the tone for the other teams with a confident 27-5 victory. The U14s were confident throughout, and controlled the game well. Brighton now has to play the undefeated Old Collegians in the Grand Final, and will be looking forward to the chance to go one better then last season and win the big one!
The Brighton Under 18s were next to play, with a very big effort needed if they were to beat Onkas, especially at their home ground. The scores were kept tight most of the day, but Brighton gradually seemed to be controlling the game more and more. Late in the game Brighton led 13-10, and finally cracked the opposition to score another try and then a late penalty, eventually winning 20-10. This was the Under 18s first win against Onkaparinga in three attempts this season, and puts them through to a repeat of last year’s grand final against Old Collegians.
Brighton Premier Grade finished the day off against an Onkas side desperate to make up for last week and not lose all of their games at home for the day.
Early on the opposition pressure kept the scores very close, and it was obvious this would not be a blow-out win for Brighton. As the game went on, Brighton started to control proceedings, and several tries in the second half eventually saw Brighton take out the victory by 30-19. Brighton Premier Grade now advance to join the Brighton Reserve Grade in playing Burnside next Saturday for a chance to have all three senior men’s teams in their Grand Finals!
Congratulations to all of the Brighton teams who played on the weekend, and thank you to everyone who came out and supported our Junior and Senior teams!
