Junior Grand Finals & Senior Prelim Finals
What a big weekend of finals rugby!
On a fine Saturday afternoon we gathered at Tregenza Oval for the Senior Preliminary finals. This was the last chance for the Brighton Reserve and Premier grades to make it into their Grand Finals.
Brighton Reserve Grade went into the match determined to get their finals back on track after losing the previous week. The first quarter of the match was scoreless, but then Burnside went a try ahead. Brighton replied with two quick tries and took a 10-7 lead into the break. After half time Burnside scored twice in the first ten minutes to lead 19-10. Brighton hit back again quickly to trail by only two points, but after twenty minutes Burnside scored a penalty and went back to a five point lead. Not to be denied, Brighton scored a barraging try under the posts to tie the scores, and went ahead with the conversion, 24-22. Burnside made a last push but a few minutes of solid defence saw Brighton through to the final whistle, and a Grand Final berth!
Brighton Premier Grade also took on Burnside for a place in the Grand Final. This game saw Brighton draw first blood with an early penalty, and then score the first try of the game to lead 13-6 after more than thirty minutes. Only a late try stopped Brighton leading at half-time.
The second half was a different story, with Burnside scoring almost immediately and then again only ten minutes later, to suddenly lead 25-13. Another try after thirty minutes of the second half gave Burnside the lead by 32-13, and Brighton had a mountain to climb to get back from there. Brighton did manage a quick reply, but could not score again, and a final late penalty sealed the win for Burnside 35-18. Unfortunately the Brighton Premier Grade finish their season at the Preliminary Final.
Brighton juniors were involved in two Grand Finals on a sunny but very windy Sunday out at Barossa, with the Under 14s and Under 18s taking on Old Collegians.
Brighton Under 14s allowed the first try of the game, but replied quickly. Just before half-time Old Collegians scored again to go into the break with a 14-5 lead over Brighton. Unfortunately for Brighton, Old Colls came out firing and scored another try in the first two minutes of the second half. When Old Colls scored again ten minutes later to lead 24-5, it looked all over.
However Brighton then dominated proceedings for the last 10 minutes of the game, coming back hard to score two converted tries, closing to within one try of Old Colls. Brighton finally ran out of time to score the winning try, losing 19-24 in a valiant effort.
The weekend finished with Brighton Under 18s looking for some redemption against a powerful Old Collegians side, in a repeat of last year’s Grand Final. Brighton battled Old Colls to a standstill for the first 20 minutes of the match, with both sides still scoreless. However Old Colls finally found a way through the Brighton defence after 23 minutes, and then moments before half-time scored again to lead 10-0 at the break.
After half-time mounting injuries saw Brighton unable to break through and score, and an increasingly confident Old Collegians side finally could no longer be prevented from increasing their lead. Brighton fought it out to the end, but despite their efforts the final score had Old Colls the winners by 36-0. An unfortunate result, especially for those players who have played the final game of their junior careers, but the club can look forward to great things from these players in their senior careers.
Well done to all of the Brighton teams who competed in finals this weekend, and good luck to the sides playing next week!

The Brighton Third Grade Gold side won this award with 169 tries for the season, and Brighton Reserve Grade came second.
