Round 9 Results

This weekend finally saw the end of any good weather, as winter set in just in time for our annual visit to Onkaparinga Rugby Club. If it wasn’t for Kevin’s tent, there would have been hardly a dry Brighton spectator to be found!

With two pitches available, the day started with the Get into Rugby kids, the Under 8s and the Under 10s all playing at the same time. All three teams enjoyed themselves as they always do, and the Under 10s reported back that they had a big win, running in plenty of tries!

Brighton Under 12s were next up on pitch one, and provided the crowd with an absolute thriller! Onkaparinga started the day top of the ladder, but the Brighton Under 12s played out of their skins to win 7 – 5, for a fifth victory in a row! In the next three games Brighton play the three sides above them, and have a real chance to move into a finals spot.

The Under 14s and Under 16s then played at the same time on pitch one and two. Despite easing off in the second half, Brighton U14s notched up their seventh in a row with a 47-10 win, and will now play next Saturday for top spot on the ladder. On the other pitch, Brighton Under 16s played another thriller, barely missing a chance at the very end to win, and having to settle for a 19-19 draw.

Brighton Under 18s played out a tough encounter next, and were unable to reverse their previous result against Onkas, losing 15-24. Brighton will look forward to Round 18 when they get another chance to square up to Onkas before the finals.

The Brighton/Barossa Women’s team played Southern Suburbs up at Barossa this week, and were not able to win their first game for the season. Despite this team morale is very high, and Brighton continues to attract a steady trickle of new players, being drawn in by the great atmosphere in the team!

In the Third grade games, Brighton Black unfortunately had to forfeit their game against Burnside, as a result of the many injuries and absences through the senior men’s grades. After a slow start, Brighton Gold made up for it with a solid bonus-point win over Onkas, 29-17. The team was led in their celebrations by Duncan McKnight, celebrating 50 senior games! Gold now has two vital games in a row that could see them clear on top of the ladder after Round 11.

Brighton Reserve grade also had to cope with a number of changes to their starting side, but dealt very well with this and continued their exceptional form, winning 27-7. This leaves Reserve Grade undefeated on top of the ladder after the first half of the season!

Premier grade then came out determined not to allow Onkas to jump out early and control the game. Brighton never really let Onkas look like they might take over, and finished up winning 36-8 in a game that had all kinds of weather packed into 80 minutes! Once again, Brighton now has a huge game next week that will see the winner finish the day in top spot.

It was a great, although very wet and cold day of rugby, but we will all be glad to be back home again next weekend!

Quiz Night!

Saturday night back at the club we were joined by ten tables battling it out for a new Brighton Quiz night trophy!

Raising funds for Junior touring, the night was a great success. In the end the victory went to team “Try Harder or Ruck Off!” who finished narrowly ahead of “Give ‘Em One of These” in second place, and “10 to Win” in third, and then only one point back to “All Beauty, No Brains” in fourth.

The rest of the field included “Miss Fits” a few points off, then “We Thought This Was Speed Dating” confused in sixth and tied with previous champs “The Bryce is Right”, then “Too Much Guinness” proving themselves correct, and finally two tables of Brighton players… The Premier Women’s table were victorious over the Premier Men, but their team names will have to be requested specially… although the Women have video of the host doing a special request announcement with matching voice!

Many thanks to all of the participants who joined in for a fun night, and to Max Bleach who put in a lot of work organising the Quiz itself, which made it very easy for the Host!

Vale Bobby Millar

The Brighton Rugby Club community was saddened to lose one of it’s past players recently, Bobby Millar.

Thank you Bobby for your time as a valued member of Brighton Rugby Club.

There will be a private funeral service this Friday, June 20th. Afterwards the Millar’s have organised a wake at the Brighton clubrooms to celebrate Bobby’s memory. Friends and teammates of Bobby’s are invited to join the family at the club from 1pm.

Please contact Glen Millar to advise if you are able to attend.

Code of Conduct

The club encourages any player, spectator or other supporter to report any issues you may encounter out at rugby.

The Rugby Australia Code of Conduct provides a set of standards for everyone involved in Rugby to ensure it is played in a safe, fair and inclusive environment. It also outlines the procedures for reporting, complaint handling and investigations of alleged breaches.

Brighton Rugby Club and all of our members and supporters have a duty to protect those involved in the game, and it is important to report someone who has acted against one or more of Rugby Australia’s policies, so appropriate action can be taken if necessary.

Please approach your coach or manager, one of our Committee members, or our Member Protection Officer Catherine Costello if you need to discuss anything that concerns you.

How to report a concern

Volunteers needed Ground Marshalls, Canteen & Bar

The club needs volunteers to help with jobs on match days, especially home games.

In particular we need volunteers to act as Bar and canteen staff, and Ground Marshalls. One of these is required at every game, juniors and seniors. The coaches and managers are not able to fill this role as well, and are also busy organising their teams.

If you are able to assist the club by acting as a Ground Marshall, volunteering your time in the canteen or bar, or by helping with any other of many jobs on match days, please see your team’s manager or speak to one of the club committee at training during the week.

Please note that all teams will be rostered to help in the canteen for a Saturday Home game during the season. When your team is rostered, please make yourself available for a short shift in the canteen.
