Rugby is more than a game, it's a community built on Discipline, Respect, Integrity, Passion and Teamwork. And at the heart of that community are our Match Officials.
They're coaches, parents, former players and volunteers who give their time so we can all enjoy the game we love. That's why the numbers matter: Match Official Abuse continues to account for over 50% of reported incidents. This is something we can fix, together.
Rugby Australia has released an updated Match Official Abuse Directive, reinforcing a simple truth: protecting our officials is everyone's responsibility. It brings zero tolerance for abuse, stronger sanctions and clear accountability. Respect is the foundation of our game.

Brighton Rugby Club is deeply saddened to advise that Life Member and former Club President Bob Gourley passed away on Monday June 29.

Bob will be sorely missed by the Club and the Brighton rugby family for his many years of dedicated service as a volunteer.

Bob and Myrtle Gourley started at Brighton in 1993 after moving here from Sydney. Almost immediately Bob became involved as a volunteer, managing Todd in juniors, and starting many years of dedicated service to the Club.

Bob retired from the Army in 1995, and continued as a civilian contractor, before working for Sandvik Mining until retiring in 2018. While he was working, Bob dedicated much of his free time to Brighton. Bob managed junior and then senior sides, served as the Brighton junior organiser, and managed several club and state tours, including for the Griff Hunt Memorial Trophy.

Bob also served on the Clubrooms committee, organised working bees, did the line marking, and with Myrtle ran the pitch-side BBQ set up next to Ronnie’s Bar at home games! Eventually Bob took on the role of Club President, and ably served Brighton in this capacity in 2002 and 2003. Countless hours of selfless volunteering were recognised in 2005 as both Bob and Myrtle were elected as Life Members of the club.

Myrtle, Ray and Todd and their families are very grateful for the support at this time from their family and friends, and pass on their thanks to all of Bob’s many mates in the rugby community.
